    Micro tarp

Anybody tried using a tarp only 60" wide?

I'm thinking it would work for dew and possibly light, no wind summer showers.

Debating making one from a single width of 60" fabric with a narrow hem. Just a rectangle so I get a little more coverage on the ends.

    Thoughts?

I have. It works ok...but only for summer, IMO. I didn't feel comfortable that it would give enough protection in windblown rain. You could compensate for that even in heavy winds if you spent more time finding a more protected site. It's doable.

+ 1 on all of the above. I have used my Roy Robinson poncho-tarptent that way. Hung on the diagonal, it gives you a somewhat improved version of the original HH tarp.

The 5' width works better than you might think if you pitch it very low, with the tarp ridge only inches above the hammock ridge line. It's a bearable minimalist approach, but it doesn't leave you much space for doing things underneath. I'll probably switch to a 7 or 8 foot width in the future.

Edit: It probably helps that I don't mind being cocooned; if you have any claustrophobia this isn't a good idea.

Is that second picture a rectangle on a diagonal?

    +1 on all of this.

That 6' wide tarp of Shug's is likely (correct me if I'm off) about 5' wide in the center, maybe even less.

What's nice about an 11x5 tarp is how well you can rearrange it for ground dwelling if necessary - it's very versatile. (Picture is poorly set-up and taken w/cell pone - but should give you an idea)

That said... you sure better know a thing or two about hiking, camping, and site location before deciding on such a minimal tarp. I sell an 11x5, and there's a reason it's in my "Fair Weather Friend" line-up. Not recommended for a bad forecast unless you really know your stuff.
