I won't give away any secrets...but Counselor has some pretty neat ideas planned for his tarps. I'm excited about the finished product.

Best of luck with this endeavor, my friend!

That is sort of what I am looking for. The plan for this trip and packing list is to try out new stuff. I've gotten a Nano7 and have equipped with dynaglide whoopies, made 1 gram arrow shaft toggles and 21 gram tree straps that are 4.5' long - all these things are new to me.

I could go with my Spinn Tarp but I've used Spinn before. I've never used Cuben fiber and have heard some good and some bad. I'd like to try some Cuben stuff but haven't put much time into looking into it. So saving weight is one factor, but seeing the rest of what the Cuben experience is like is the other part.

OK lighter.... but how much lighter?

How long can I use the tarp before it loses its water resistant properties?

Less noisy than SpinnUL or the same?

    Packs smaller or the same?

Does is stretch over-night like Silnylon?

How long can I go without re-sealing the seams?

Don't get me wrong I'm totally interested... but I have never dealt with cuben fabric before.

    - It doesn't lose its water resistant properties - it is not coated like silnylon is.

Less noisy than SpinnUL or the same?

    - Just as noisy.

    Packs smaller or the same?

    - packs tiny.

Does is stretch over-night like Silnylon?

    - No stretching.

How long can I go without re-sealing the seams?

    - No seam sealing required at all.

Don't get me wrong I'm totally interested... but I have never dealt with cuben fabric before.

Quest Outfitters says this about Cuben Fiber:

This is the lightest wt. outdoor fabric we have ever seen. It is 50% lighter than Kevlar, four times more durable than Kevlar and lasts as long as Spectra and remarkable weighs less than 1/2 oz. per square yard. It flexes without loosing strength. Cuben Fiber is a laminated fabric constructed from plasma treated Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers and monofilament polyester film. Cuben Fiber retains 100% of its original strength after being folded 250 times. It is not effected by salt water nor does it soak up water. It has great UV resistance and is extremely water resistant.

No, not overnight but will over time. If I had another one I would be easier about tightening the ridgeline. It does not need to be tightened like a nylon tarp. When it is tight no need to try for more.

No need for cat cuts other to save more weight. Tarp will pitch tight without them.
Carry a small amount of clear duct tape for repairs, blends right in.

Glad to see someone going after this market and looking forward to seeing the designs.

Raul - there is lots of information available about Cuben fiber... and opinions about it. The greatest advantage is weight... by a large margin. Second biggest advantage (my understanding) is the strength. It's the fabric most gram-counters would use if they could afford it.

Counselor, I take it that you will be taping your seams. A number of different people (including me) have posted information on tape and glue options here and on other forums. My own thoughts are based on research and a bare minimum of experience - hardly authoritative. What's your take on the best way to make a cuben seam?
