LW 56" Walmart Ripstop (~1.1oz) suitable for DIY hammock?

Hey guys, I'm new here, but I'm an active DIYer in the more gravitationally displaced UL arena.

Interested in getting into hammocking, but buying a tree sling seems like cheating.

I've got a ton of the lighter weight dwr ripstop from the walmart buck-fidy bin, maybe 20yards or so... It's more like 1.1oz(approx, I haven't cut off a yard to weight it, but I did some 9th-grade math on some stuff sacs I made) stuff, 56" wide, selvage to selvage.

Is this stuff too weak, or too narrow?

    I'm about 5"9-10", and ~155ish.

I'm pretty new to this scene, but a basic asym design seems doesn't seem to hard to get started on. Although I'm obsessed with bridge style, as I've recently started having LCL/MCL probs with my knees. So any advice would be helpful.

If I need to save this fabric for other things, I will.

    Thanks guys!

P.S. I've got my work cut out for me sorting through all the info here.

I just started a thread the other day about this stuff. I weighed it once and it's more lik 0.9oz, not 1.1. Use the search function and put in my name to find the thread.

Walmart has all kinds of differnet fabrics, and it's not easy to tell what it is over the internet. It may be either polyester or nylon...nylon is stronger but stretchier. I wouldn't use .9 or 1.1 oz polyester in a single layer, but you might be able to use 1.1 oz nylon depending on your weight.

If you're unsure, just make a double layer!

    yeah rechecked my math.

You're right, I rechecked my math, and it does come out to more like 0.9oz/y

Which is awesome for the price I paid for it, and it has a nice feel. It does seem to have some undesirable stretch if I get rough with it, so I think I'll save this for quilts.

Any suggestions on the best place to get some cheap 1.3ozish stuff suitable for single layer at a decent(dirt cheap) price?

Don't make down quilts with it... the down will come right through the fabric. If you're making some sort of synthetic it will probably be fine.
