Places that I was thinking about are in the lower peninsula of Michigan, I only know of a few trips that I have done in the past.
    1. The Manistee River Trail (water, trail, scenery, Toilets in the Red Bridge area)

    2. North Country Trail Manistee loop (rugged, min water, map see above)

    3. North Manitou Island (water, most wild place other the UP, Trails, scenery, can handle larger groups, ferry to island min 2 day stay)

Other places??? Don't know to much about places handling groups out there and what the rules are. (some places don't want large groups ie, Deem wilderness from the Hoosier Hang)

I will look at my backpacking Michigan book to see what's out there. I would probably want to make it a backpacking hang with a limited number of people? thoughts? Ideas? Just throwing stuff out there....

Gargoyle; this is just mean. Clothing optional!?! There is not enough eye-bleach in the world to cleanse that image.

Thanks for considering us Canucks. I would prefer the lower half of the state too. One additional thought; will there be toilet facilities?

I like to HAM it up on the CW.
    I use Linux.
    I play go.
Of course I sleep in a hammock!

That Yankee Springs looks perfect to me. Close but not too close.

How about an early event, say June or July in the Yankee Springs area and a fall colors event say October for the Manistee area. That would give lots of lead time for those who are willing and able to be northern most in the mitten.

I have to drive further for the event in Bloomington than to the Manistee, so I don't have issue with it. Besides, it truly is my second home. I will be doing a fall colors canoe trip so I would have to work around that. Just thinking out loud, well on paper at least.

That sounds good to me canoebie. Deep Lake offers 100+ plus sites , so those who are against the 'crowd' thing can pick a site away from everyone, yet be able to visit a central "HF Home Base" site.
Deep Lake is a easy 2 hour (approx.) drive from the border/stateline, making it an easy commute for all neighboring states. $12.00 a night site fee is reasonable.

MRT side is really great scenery but I can't speak to the NCT side. Both of my previous times I've ended up hiking back south on the NCT to the Red Bridge lot in the dark.
    http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hmnf/pages/R...mpandtrail.pdf

The NCT side is rather hilly. Lots of up and down draws in the hill sides. Very little water, about 8-9 dry miles. And very few if any views to really speak of, the money shots are all on the east side of the loop. But it is a nice hike, I really enjoyed it.

If you look at the map, at the North end of the NCT (west) side where the trail parallels Eddington Creek just to the south of that is an awesome Pine "Plantation" area that looked like it would be great for hanging, there is also a spot of up a hill just to the north across the creek that could handle a few hammocks (See pic). The Creek near Sheep Ranch Road in unreliable, totaly dry last summer. The camp a Red Bridge is not hammock friendly (open sites, no close trees).

I hiked from old US 131 campground to Baxter Bridge. Lots of water as it follows the Manistee the whole way. Trees everywhere. I am not familiar with anything beyond Baxter Bridge. I think it is about an 8-10 mile hike. I did it solo last summer and simply hiked back to my vehicle. No loop. I was by myself and had a great time. Rolled over early morning to a reactive snorting, opened my eyes and about 10 deer surrounded me with great curiosity. Guess I was on their trail. National headquarters for NCT is in Lowell MI, we could get more detailed maps, etc. there. Again, just thinking out loud a bit. This would be a great fall colors trip. I would have my insultex UQ and TQ complete by then. Not to mention my self made sil nylon tarp.
