Any suggestions for mount rogers? thanks!

Can you make a suggestion for my upcoming trip?

I will be hiking in friday early am, with some friends who are in the 5 mile or less range, setting up camp, going for a quick day hike and then returning for dinner to the campsite. They will leave in the am the way the came and I'd like to continue for another night and return the following morning. Any suggestions would be welcome or I'll just be making a random guess with a map. All I know is where the mount rogers hang was (and by the way I can't wait for next year!)

Thanks so much for your input!

I would go right back to Wise Shelter. You park at Massey Gap, and they park at the gravel parking lot close to Wise. The less than 5 milers can hike in from the gravel parking lot and out the same way. You can stay and hike up to Rhododendron Gap for an overnight, returning via Massey Gap.

Have you stayed at rhodedendrum gap? Is there water? I don't see a shelter on the map. Is there designated campsites or nice areas you suggest?

I've only hiked up to it... it's way up on the ridge. On the way there, you will pass two or three camp sites. There's lot of other places you could hang. You'll have to take water.

Since it is a high ridge, you would have to be mindful of the weather. You might have to descend before making camp.

If you do manage to spend a night on the ridge, what a fine night that would be!

I've spent many a night up on that ridge in the Rhododendron Gap Area. Beautiful place, w/ lots of hike options. Can be windy though & a little crowded on a nice weekend.
There is water near the intersection of Rhododendron Gap Trail (4612) & Crest Trail (4605).
The numbers I listed are from the National Geographic map. Which map do you have?

If you think they may want a little longer hike in that the 45 minute walk to Wise Shelter, another option that is fairly easy is to Rhododendron Gap from the Elk Garden parking area (west of Rhododendron Gap).

Another place I like to camp is near the intersection of the Pine Mt Trail & the Lewis Fork Trail. There is a water source there too.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
