Easy to find you, then... down Spence, cross river, turn right... need to know how to recognize the area near holes in rocks.

Which side? North or south from Spence?

    This could be fun!

It's really easy ... if we do go that way then we're visible from the trail ... it's a quarter klic from the cut rock trail section.
Yeah if down Spence you cross the bridge and head north (right)

But I'll call you Tuesday at the latest and give you an update. If they're working the trail Monday then probably will go elsewhere. Based on what we find out Monday that'll determine where I park. Right now I'm guessing I might be parked at Babel Towers and hike out that way. Glen will be parked at Spence so if he goes he'll either head back to Spence or hike out with me and I'll shuttle him back.

Lots of possibilities!!! Lots of fun.

Food is all dehydrated, packaged, and ready to go!! A little on the heavy side, of course, cause I tend to overpack my food. I won't go hungry, that's for sure!!

After Mother's Day dinner.......packing up the Catalyst and get a final weigh-in...

Pretty good day today!!! Even got to speak to my son who's serving in Northern Afghanistan!!

I think so Jerry ... there's actually two ... one at camp Hobo and one a bit further north toward Babel. Anyway yeah Saturday night we can decide what we all want to do. I'll know by tomorrow late what the USFS is doing with the trail work. If they close down the trails we might need to head to the rim but that's good too!

Tim, I'm not sure about Brad, but a friend of his is. Can't remember the username at the moment. I'll have to think on it.

I am REALLY looking forward to this hike….especially after reading all these posts and researching on the web. Planning to leave the Atlanta area on Thursday and staying up there near the Spence Ridge trail head that night. Maybe a cheap hotel or hang nearby. Then meet you folks at the parking area at 10 AM. This is my first “hang” and I have not met anyone in the group but somehow I think that I will not have any trouble recognizing y’all. I’ll be the tall goofy looking guy with a puzzled look on his face.

By the way, if anyone in the Atlanta / GA area wants to car pool up there let me know…

Falcon Closure Areas At Linville Gorge

    .

Just thought it best to remind everyone that there are areas in LG that are closed due to the Peregrine Falcons (nesting). The areas are along the NC Wall and Shortoff. I spoke directly with Mr. John Crockett, Grandfather District Ranger -Pisgah National Forest, and checked on where it is acceptable to hike/camp when near the areas of the closures. He told me when hiking along the MST, a person should not go to the West of the MST when at the closure areas. He emphasized this is when at the closure areas ONLY. He stated the Law Enforcement Rangers WILL enforce this closure. Anywhere else (east or west) along the MST is open except the areas in question.

Here are a couple of GE pics with the CLOSURES OUTLINED YELLOW, along with the Closure Notice itself.

These boundries were added into a GE kmz file by our friends Marshall and Bob, from the Linville Gorge Yahoo site http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linvillegorge/
    and Kens site http://www.linvillegorge.net/
