Several opinions on that pal ... if you're carrying say less than 30 lbs, don't have ankle problems .... and pay a bit of attention and care not to turn an ankle ... I don't think there'd be a problem. I've used them many times but I personally prefer a light weight boot with some ankle support. But that's just me ... and I've been wrong before!

    Jason,

Like we talked yesterday, your choice. But as Michael alluded to... lots of roots, rocks, slips, etc...

As you know I like (need) "bomb proof" boots in the gorge! They are heavier, but they treat me right!

Trail Runners ? That assumes a trail! Sections of the LGT really don't qualify as a trail, just rocks, brush, brambles and leaf filled holes.
I THOUGHT GETTING OLDER WOULD TAKE MUCH LONGER.

Nooner, just my humble opinion, but if you knock 5 to 10 pounds off that pack weight, it won't matter which shoes you choose! You'll be happy with either!

(I like the breakfast buffet, they even have liver mush ). Get off I-40 at exit 105 and go North about 1 long block. Abeles on the left (hospital entrance on the right).

Tim, not pushing at all pardner, but any news yet if you'll be catching a ride with Nooner and me? We'll be leaving early Fri. morning (breakfast in Morganton at Abeles)..

I bought some Keen Voyagers last year on a Thursday. The next day I left for a three day trip to Slickrock Wilderness. I covered about 14 miles a day in some nasty rocks, roots and streams with about a 25 pound pack. I did not have the first issue, and I was impressed at how stable a trail runner could be on off camber sections of the trail. I think Keen's "secret" is the footbed. It is very stable and provides me with as much stability as about any boot I have used. The other benefit is that I was able to leave them on for stream crossings and let them dry while I hiked.

When the water is deep, and the crossings frequent, I find a non waterproof shoes that dries quickly to be more useful than a waterproof boot that either holds water in or must be removed for deeper crossings. YMMV, but I'm glad that I made the switch.

BTW, during colder hikes with frequent crossings, I use the same shoes but with Sealskinz on underneath. The neoprene may not keep you dry, but it will keep your feet warm.

The only time I wear boots for hiking now is when it is very cold, snow or ice is expected, or I'm planning on carrying over 50 pounds (usually hunting).
