Is it okay to put one end of the OEM tree hugger strap through the other end and then hang using the one loop only?

I am wondering about trying a Beckett hitch applied to one end of the tree strap.

Yep, perfectly acceptable and the original intent of the loop. People use carabiners or soft shackles just as a convenience.

Perfectly fine, yes, and if there's no loop (or you want to bypass the loop) an appropriate knot works as well. For years I've used slipped buntline hitch with Kevlar, poly and other tree straps with zero issues.
