    Thoughts on a pad idea

What are people's thoughts on using a thicker layer of neoprene (like 5mm or so) as a pad/insulation layer. I feel that the neoprene could add a lot of warmth along with some cushion. In addition, if cut right I wonder if the flexability would work well with the general form of a hammock and be able to insulate the sides as well. Just an idea. Haven't tested anything yet. What do you think??

It would probably work. Don't know how much it would weigh or how much temp it would add. Isn't the best aspect of neoprene is the fact it is still warm when wet? I don't think that is something you want to plan for as a regular thing in a hammock.

The big draw back I can see would be condensation issues.

I'm guessing it would be heavier than a foam sleeping pad of comparable warmth, but can't see any reason it wouldn't work.

If you are looking for a thin and flexible pad for insulation, you might want to consider the gossamer gear thinlight, and similar products

I use one of these. No slip, really flexible, very light.

Biggest issue would be weight...followed by cost (e.g. $21 per lineal foot (48" wide) at Seattle Fabrics)

EVA pads (e.g. JRB Torso pad) is only 6.5 oz for 40"x24". $9.95

    Gossamer Gear 1/4 inch thinlight is 41 x 61 x 1/4 in. (104 x 155 x .635 cm.) and weighs about 8.5 oz or less. $30.

I couldn't find any quick reference for weight, but any neoprene I've ever handled is far heavier than EVA foam.

Awesome. Thank you for the feedback. I think sticking to lightweight foam padding is what I'll do. Thanks again for the feedback!!

I've used my 5mm neoprene stocking foot waders down around 45F in a dbl. It worked some cold spots and it balled up in spots. (I guess one could put them on if you got too cold. That might get smelly though). Thought I could kill two birds with one stone. But I made a vow that morning that I won't camp with out my ccf pad period. Unless I get an underquilt.
If you can't duck it then use more duct tape!
