    Singer 4220/4228

Over the holiday I was given a second hand sewing machine that looks to be great for me to start learning to make gear with. It is a "Singer Inspiration 4220/4228." I don't know what I'm doing but am sure I will figure it out based on the great tutorials on here.

My very first question before getting started is if this machine is going to be 'ok' for the gear making I plan to do. (tarps, stuff sacks, snake skins etc.) I just don't want to tear something up or get frustrated because it is not an appropriate model.

You can do all those projects listed with any regular home sewing machine. For casual DIY use, that should be sufficient.

Enjoy - and be sure to post pics!

I'm not familiar with the model but most any machine will make gear if you learn how to use it properly. The biggest issue many face, aside from tension adjustments, is the machine lacking the power to do webbing and heavy duty reinforcement stitches. If power is a problem usually you can deal with that by hand turning the fly wheel and essentially sewing by hand. Have fun with your new toy.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

This appears to be the beast I now own. Is there some sort of horsepower guideline I ought to look for for sewing webbing? I guess it doesn't matter since it appears I should be able to at least get started learning with this machine.
