I just picked one up at Le Baron Sports in Ottawa. $40

Not my dream tarp but seems to fit the bill nicely and $100 less that one I would have ordered.

I'm going to make a couple tent poles for the two bottom grommets to open it up a bit for my bridge hammock.

    Danalex,
I like to run the corner guy lines on one side thru 8' tall limbs found in the wood to create a porch in the day time. At night I can kick the limbs down and attach the guy lines to the ground to "button up"

This is what I'm thinking about but have 2 poles, one pole close to each end and it'll open the tarp up to clear my spreader bars. If the tension on the guy out lines were released I think it would let the side rise up like you are suggesting and still have tension in it from the pole. Then find the apropriate dead fall or trecking pole to anchor it

I viewed your pictures and remember the internal tent pole mod.
With your design, can't you just release the guy lines on one side and then shorten them on the other and the tarp will pivot on the ridgeline creating an open porch?

It would not be as sturdy as adding poles and guy lines to the open porch side, but generally when I want a porch it is nice weather and you dont need it nailed down.

When I do the porch from downed limbs, I dont even add guy lines from the poles to the ground. I just let the weight of the poles hold themselves in place.

That's what I was trying to say here:

"If the tension on the guy out lines were released I think it would let the side rise up like you are suggesting and still have tension in it from the pole."

So, over all what's your take on the tarp? I just ordered one as I won't yet depart with the money for a superfly after sending money for a WBBB.

I got my Chinook from Sears (or some off shoot of Searsand it took over a month 1/2 to finally get it) for $30'ish and finally had a chance to go to a local park for setup. I'm happy, however this is the 1st time I set up a tarp in this fashion and chose to go the contious ridge line so I really have nothing to compare. The next time I'll play around with closing the ends as Randy had shown in his pictures.

I just ordered one of these from Amazon for $45 shipped. I had been using a big heavy-duty (10 lb) tarp that was an absolute pain. The Chinook is slightly bigger and looks like it's 100x easier to work with. Thanks to the OP for the great setup pictures.
