Well, it looks like the comments and suggestions are about in so I thought I'd mention where I plan to go with it. The reservations that several contributors expressed, or hinted at, together with the fact that I was still threading the bitter end two or three times through the ring, gave me pause. Also, the only aspect of the knot that seemed questionable was using a bight of AmSteel as a toggle. So I spent an hour or so messin' around with it, with one of my small, smooth, hard toggles at hand, and decided on the following:
1. Make the two or three turns around the ring with a bight instead of the bitter end. With very little practice it was quite easy to keep the tail-end turns out of the way, off to one side of the ring.
2. Tie a single slippery half hitch to hold the adjustment while repeating step #1 at the other end of the hammock.
3. Insert a small, smooth, hard toggle through the "slippery" loop and pull tight.
Making the turns around the ring with a bight instead of all the unused hang-line is a distinct improvement provided the tail-end turns are kept out of the way.
Toggling the slippery half hitch with a hardwood toggle instead of a bight of AmSteel is a distinct improvement provided the toggle is conveniently attached to the ring with a short lanyard. It's an improvement because the hardwood toggle pulls out more easily than the AmSteel bight toggle did.
Knowing that a bight of AmSteel will also work satisfactorily relieves me of uneasiness about losing a toggle.
Sum total? Win, win, win. Thanks to all.
