    Tree straps... different materials?

I have straps from both Clark and Hennessy, they are quite different. I'm curious if anyone here knows the specific differences between them and any advantage/disadvantage of one over the other?

I don't have a scale here, but here are my superficial observations...

    -- The Clark straps are 2" x 89" vs the HH straps 1.5" x 46"
-- The Clark straps seem to weigh about the same, despite being much bigger.
-- The Clark straps are obviously more bulky and take up more space.
-- Clark straps are sort of stiff feeling, coarse weave and when folded or bunched up seem to hold the wrinkles for awhile before smoothing back out.
-- HH straps are much softer and more pliable. They seem to be made of standard seatbelt webbing type material.

Anyone have any idea what the Clark straps are made of exactly? Any reason why they shouldn't be used in a Marlin Spike Hitch set up? They seem to work fine to me as far as I can tell, but they are SO different than the straps most people are using that I'm very curious what's up. It appears to me that a strap made to the smaller 1.5" x 46" dimension would weigh significantly less than the HH straps... so what's the negative that I'm overlooking?

The HH straps look like a very tight weave like a Seatblet style webbing, they are generally very strong and can range from very light to very heavy in thickness so that can play a huge factor in the weight of the strap. The Clark strap look like a tight weave Ploy of some sort and they tend to be lighter than seatlbelt but not as durable.

Get some of Paul's straps ... dang lightest ... "bestest" strap I've found!

That's from a "strapping old Fart's" point of view!

possibly different materials altogheher. can't say about those 2 specific brands, but some general webbing info for anyone interested:

nylon is strong enough but stretches too much, polypro is light and stretch resistent but pretty weak, polyester is best (high strength and low stretch).

a polyester webbing in the 5-6 grams/foot range is plenty strong and pretty light. the camo owf webbing and mine are both about 6g/ft and in the 1500-2000 LBS range. 1" polypro is lighter, but only rated to 400 LBS i believe. several here have broken 1" polypro

Well all I can say ... under threat of bodily harm by his two miniature Ninjas ... his camo straps have a ... well .. unique property related to total stealth camping. Not that there aren't some "minor" draw backs.

Look for a video coming to a forum near you by the end of the month.

Based on how it feels to the touch, I'd guess the Clark straps are polypro... That might also explain why it's 2" vs everyone else selling 1" or 1.5".

I asked Clark about the straps and the rope that my NX-250 came in with.
Here's what they said:The straps are rated at 2200lbs and the black poly rope is rated at 1700lbs.

Although being stronger than the 1 inch straps,i'll still hang with 1'' straps instead of the original 2'' just because of the bulk space it takes in one's bag!
There's only so much cubic inch i can transport inside and out, although the weight doesn't seem to bother me!

Good info to know. Thanks C-O-P...
I like the flexibility that the 89" straps give me (BIG trees, etc), but the bulk is pretty significant to be sure.
