i Made tree straps exactly like those, out of nylon tubular webbing rated for 4000+ lbs.

the sewn loops didnt hold, well, not all of them have held.

I gave up using them, when a loop snapped, it was SCARY.

I sewed a 1.5 inch long 'X' shape, and boxed it, usiing a zig zag stitch, and non cotton thread.

IM not sure how I could have made it much stronger?
Do you mean like the slapstrap? If so this link has some tech info on the different ways these type of straps are sewn and why yours may have had problems.

    Ozarkjeep,

My straps and 'biners arrived, so I now have all I need to convert and will try out the new way to hang this weekend at the FL/AL Hang.

Upon looking at Ed's straps, the bartacks are like Griz's pic. Ed put FIVE of them in, however. These should NEVER pop!

Yea Ed's loops are super strong. Wish he would start using 1500lb. breaking strength polyester in black so I could buy some from him.

i herd him say he's looked around but not found nearly as good a price on buying the polyester in bulk.
maybe if we encourage him, he'll keep looking for a good source to buy polyester webbing in bulk.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

    OK,

those are different from mine, ill post some pics of one of mine here shortly.

my thread wasnt old, it was polyester, and its only the ones that arent loaded directly from the loop that broke.

    Ill get some pics.

    ahh,

    I see the problem.

some I did a boxed X shape ( the ones that have held)

and some were like sideways bartacks.
I outlined in Red the stitch pattern.

duh, I have slept since I made them, and my memory isnt good.

so for the record, boxed X = strong.

    messed up bartack = weak!

I have always done the X, but I put a lot more stiches in mine , I really do not like falling to the ground

    ALOT more stiches?

I guess that pic isnt good enough, there is ALOT of thread density there.

that loop wont give, in fact, Ill tow my wifes truck up the driveway with it this weekend just to test it. ( I need to pull the other badly sewn loops out anyway so they dont scare me)

I wish it was lighter though, the tubular webbing is HEAVY bulky to pack.

ozrakjeep, is your second picture showing the way the "bar tack" was sewn or just an out line of the bar tack?
a bar tack should be a zig zag back & forth over it's self several times.
