Yeah -- I'm just trying to ask as much as i can because I haven't made anything besides my tarp and some stuff sacks, which neither are very complicated. I'll probably mess around with some scale models to see how thing will actually work out.

If you have much experience with darts -- is there such a thing as a good/average 'depth' of sewn dart? or that all up for experiment as well?

I had several darts on my first UQ .... filled my hammock with firewood on a pad to replicate my weight and just started pinning away. It worked really good. I had no idea what i was doing Did the same on my second half UQ.
Then made my outside layer a bit bigger and copied the darts but a bit less deep. Been happy with them.

    I made a little quilt (just one layer) that's about 15 x 10 inches.

Based on what I've seen with this one -- it's better to do more smaller darts than fewer bigger ones?

I did three darts to reduce the size from 10 inches to about 3 or so (just experimenting) But i'm guessing making the same reduction but with more darts would give better results as far as shape?

Also -- shug, on your UQ's, how deep did you make the darts on your inner and outer layers? Just so i can get a sense of other people's designs.

    Edit:

One thing I started wondering was how do you keep the head and foot sides snug against the hammock? Could I make a channel at each end and put a piece of shock cord slightly shorter than the channel that connects to the main lines running down the sides so that it is under constant tension without the need for adjustment? .... If any of that makes sense

    KAQ pattern

I have used the Kelli Wise pattern.

Regarding darts... I use 3"X1.5" darts (1.5" on the fabric edge), spaced 6" apart, larger darts at the shoulders, at least 6"X3".

If you don't gather the ends, and make a full length UQ, why do you need shock cord channels? IX is far lighter than a KAQ. You could argue that the heavier KAQ needs the extra sag from long shock cords, but I wonder about that.

I am SOO glad you are doing this thread, I almost did one just like it. I hope you don't mind if I pipe in once or twice.

Have you seen both of these options for insultex?

Approximately how many darts does that mean you have along the edges of the quilt?

And how does it being a full length quilt change that you would want it snug against the hammock?

(all these questions come from lack of experience, I'm not trying to be of any annoyance)

One dart every six to eight inches, all the way around!

That's not the issue. Channels are for using a longer piece of shock cord for the suspension. The longer the shock cord, the more it can stretch. That might be important if the UQ is relatively heavy, or if you want a generous range of adjustment, or if you want no longitudinal stress on the UQ. However, if an UQ is very light, it doesn't need all that stretch in the suspension. You can just attach the shock cord to the corners. It will still fit snugly against the hammock, just as if it had shock cord in channels.

For instance, the very light Hennessey Supershelter OCF pad has shock cord sewn to the ends.

So if I'm planning on making a full length (which i'm looking at about 7 feet right now -- I figured I'd go big, because I can always cannibalize it to make something smaller if it ends up as disaster) and 48" wide with a taper to around 24"-30" at the ends, then I'd have to make the inner shell ~105" (8' 9") long and 30"-37.5" wide? Does that math make sense? It would be about 14 darts along the length of the quilt and 4 or 5 depending on how wide I decide to make it.

I think I should have been a little more specific.

I doubt you will have fourteen 1.5" darts on each 7' side, because there won't be darts at the ends, and if you put 6" between darts, then there will be one dart for every 7.5". More like ten darts per side.

If they are 1.5" darts, and there are 10 on each side, then add 15" to the length.

If there are 3 such darts on each end, add 4.5 inches to the width at the ends.

    Izzat better?
