Gonna bite the bullet and buy a thread injector...

Welllll up until now I've been using my aunt's sewing machine. She gave me a lesson when I came over to pick it up (mainly how to thread it and basic stitching. <-- me when I made a little pocket out of two scrap pieces of denim

Well she does quite a bit of seamtressing and dressmaking for her daughters and herself, so after three weeks it is time to return it to its rightful home. I'd love to buy the same machine she has but I can't afford it plain and simple. I'm sure if I knew all the buttons and options I could probably just say "make me a quilt" and the magical gnomes inside will pop out and make it for me...

So I stopped into wally-world to get some blank DVD's and checked out what they had.
    I saw THIS

Which seams reasonable. the reviews on the wally-world site seem to mirror other online retailer review section so ....

Maybe if I just tell my aunt I already returned it to her and she must have misplaced it....

A shipping weight of only 17 pounds tells me it is a very lightweight machine. That means it could be prone to bouncing around in the table while you are trying to feed the fabric through. I find nothing more annoying than to have to chase the machine across the table. YMMV.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

There's a deep rooted community bias here, in favor of older, heavier (cast iron v. plastic) machines. I bought a Singer that's almost as old as I am, and almost weighs as much...some have bought used machines for a pittance.

That said, some members have bought low end, made in China machines, and had very good luck with them, turning out some lovely stuff along the way...Randy comes to mind. Buy what you can afford, take care of it, and it will most likely serve you well.

Check your local Craigslist before buying a new (most likely plastic geared) one. Often you can find a nice old steel one for really cheap.

Or at worst, get a cheap plastic injector for free or close. I got one for free off Craig's list and another for $10. Neither is impressive, but it gets the job done.
