How to sleep in a shelter?

How or what is your set up for sleeping in shelters? If your primary sleeping system is a hammock, (make/model not really a factor). What do you do if you are not using a pad. (If using a pad I can figure it out) but, I am looking to get the JRB 3 season set up, AND would like the ability to sleep well in a shelter. Rain? or for what ever comes up. Any thoughts? Ideas? Tried and proven tips?

    Thanks
    Sandy B

You can hang in shelters if you're sure it's strong enough and if you're not inconveniencing anyone. But w/ underquilts you either use the hammock, sleep in the shelter w/o a pad, or carry a an extra pad. A 1/4" torso pad can be about 6 oz...if staying in shelters is worth that much weight, just carry it.

Otherwise, deal with a pad in the hammock and you'll always have it ready.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were an underquilt that converted into a pad and still weighed less than a pound?

Hrm...an insulated hammock that converts to a pad and bivy. Prolly the holy grail of hammocks. Free Twinkie to whoever designs it first.

I did a section hike in the GSMNP, stayed in the shelters. But it got me to thinking about the thru hikers who are planning on using a hammock. For this section I just went back to some of my old ground dweller gear.
I do belive I sleep better in a hammock and on my next section hike and when I do my thru (2014) that is what I'll pack.
Jeff - I don't think I am ready to sleep without a pad of some type. I have a polycro ground cover from http://www.gossamergear.com/cgi-bin/...und_cloth.html
It is light weight, If I put that down first then the JRB underquilt, would my weight just flatten out the loft or would the underquilt provide any padding? I am trying to figure things out before I buy more gear that is bound for my closet.

PS how do ya'll make those links in blue?

Down quilts will provide very little insulation if you lay on them. Might be enough to get you through a warm night, but I wouldn't rely on one for shelter-sleeping in the Smokies in Mar/Apr.

The links automatically show up blue after you click submit.

hum. Well, the down mat thingies, yeah? what If the hammock body was made out of that, but was big and flexible, like a down quilt, and you could blow it up and seal a valve to convert to pad. (issue: breathability) and you could have a bivy like thingy on top. Hmm.

Well, I'll sketch something up. It's fun to prototype.

Interesting idea. If the DAM was strong enough. Actually only the top layer would have to be strong enough to hold your weight.

    Hmmm

Forgot to add, Welcome to the forum TH.

TH - go here, click on Products --> Hammocks --> Hammat. Not exactly what you're talking about, but close.
