Trip Report - Springer Mountain w/ 8.2 lbs Base Weight

I just uploaded a trip report to my site for a quick overnighter I took last July...up and back the AT Approach Trail. There are some pics of the WBBB with a 9 oz partial underquilt (61"x36" with 0.8" PrimaLoft). My gear list for the 8.2 lbs base weight is posted on there...I used my new 7.5 oz Gossamer Gear Murmur pack, which was pretty comfortable.

Re: the weight, my total shelter weight was ~5 lbs, including extras like tarp tensioners, biners (didn't have the DCs yet) and webbing.

It was a pretty good trip...I sat watching a butterfly feed off a flower for about two minutes. I got a decent video of it but it's still .avi, so it's 166MB. I'll get my video software straightened out soon so I can convert it to something smaller and post the video.

Great trip report Jeff, thanks! Your site is awesome, can't wait to see the vid! I haven't gotten alot of sections of the AT done yet (just a couple) but I hope that the time that I get to Springer that it's around the same time as the one you just did cause it looked great, really green and seemed as everything was blooming, which would make for some great views! I don't think that my sinuses would appreciate it (all the pollen) but that would be a small price to pay just to be out there!!!

Yeah - there was a lot of green and lots of flowers, butterflies, birds, etc. But July in Georgia is pretty hot...I barely remember the heat and humidity now, though. Just the good views. And the big walk up to the falls.

Thanks Jeff for taking the time to publish the report. Looked your gear list over and it inspires me to see if I can fit everything into my Zpacks Zilch, it has 2000 ci. Going to hike the PA Black Forest Trail next week and wanted to give the smaller pack a try. I also use and love the JRB Stealth. When not over me its an underquilt. However, it's still dipping into the 20's at night now and then. The larger quilt will have to come along.

Thanks Jeff. As always, a great report. I was just thinking of making a lite summer underquilt like the kids quilt you used on the trip. Does that work for you? It seems mighty small.

Thanks for the trip report. I enjoyed seeing all the green woods.

Hobbit - that's actually one of the reasons I wanted the Murmur...just to challenge myself to taking a smaller load. That means I had to make sure there weren't any extraneous items in my pack, and volume was easily as much issue as weight was. For me, the difference between 15 and 30 lbs is pretty minimal - I can tell the difference but it doesn't really affect my hiking...but it sure was nice hiking with such a small pack!

krugd - the quilt works fine. I originally made it for the kids so the 36" was perfect...and that's the width of the PL I used. I'd probably go up a bit if I the material came in in larger width, but the 36" works fine for the summer quilt, for me.
