    MacCat replacement

I'm attempting to get back into backpacking (and hammocking) after years of not doing so.

I need a tarp to replace my MacCat Ultra. Mine could be fine, but considering it is spinnaker and about 15 years old, I don't really trust it to hold up in a downpour.

What is available on market that is closest? I can't seem to find one that is of such good quality.

I bought a tarp, but it is not seam sealed and the maker does not seam seal. My skills are insufficient and I ruined the tarp attempting to seamseal. So, the tarp maker must offer seamsealing.

If the tarp has been stored dark and dry, I see no reason why it wouldn't work as well as when you packed it away. If you are doubtful, just hang it up in your backyard (if you have one) and give it a test e.g. by pouring water over it. I definitely wouldn't write it off without checking.

There are lots of good quality tarps with similar or better coverage than the MacCat Ultra available these days, but not so many that come seamsealed. I believe Simply Light Design tarps are all seamsealed. And Warbonnet tarps only need seamsealing in the panel pulls, not in the ridgeline.

I have a MacCat Deluxe from 2006 that I used in a downpour this year and I stayed plenty dry.

As for seam sealing an easy trick is to use Permatex flowable windshield sealant. It is the perfect consistency right out of the tube. I lay the seam over a 2x4, squeeze out a few-inch bead of silicone, then spread it using a foam paintbrush, and repeat until the whole seam is sealed.
