First night in Amok Draumr 3

hey friends! I finally got a chance to test out my Draumr 3.0 I got the steal of a century on. First impression is it solves some of the things that prevent me from going full GE koolaid:

flat - this thing is flaaaaat.
tight around the shoulders - Draumr is more like a bed as the wings go way out
no tightness or compression on feet - footbox is plenty wide and tall even for stacked feet on side
storage - got plenty of it

    concerns:
the biggest complaint i had was the knees. i actually had space under my knees which led to a concave sorta feeling which kept waking me up. I tried a knee pillow but that only sort of helped. I then tried adjusting the strap but it didn't really raise the knees area so much as raise the footbox.

    that's really the only complaint.

am i missing something in how to set it up or is there a best practice for solving that? I really want to keep this hammock, er air bed, er whatchamacallit.

I did have some fun rigging up a Blaze UQ. Wasn't perfect but gave me more "wing" insulation. I wonder if those exist for this thing?

The function of the lower adjustment straps is actually to allow the knees to be bent down so you can sit on it like a recliner chair. I personally would loosen them all the way and try it again, but that's a guess. I've not had the knee issue so maybe there's something else at play?

As to the knee issue.....Could also be the way you wave it rigged with all the extra stuff like UQ and big extra pad. Worth a try to see.
I often use the knee straps to have my feet a little down while laying flat as then my knees have support.
You'll find your groove in it in time.

I had the straps fully loosened and only played with them to see if it would have direct knee support.

Shug that's a good thought about just doing it out of the box to see if it's different.

    thanks!

I like how you wrapped it in that underquilt! I always get cold in mine because I toss and turn so much onto the sides and I usually only use it in the summer. But you are on to something! As Shug said, you do have a lot going on that may be changing the way it is supposed to lay, but it may be warmer. If the knee gap keeps being annoying, you could stuff some things under the pad like stuff sacks, extra jacket or whatever to raise the knee area. Since the stuffing will be under the pad, you probably will not know it is there and it probably will not shift around like a pillow would. Tuning hammocks to how you like them is part of the fun!

hrm, you definitely shouldn't have space under your knees

the default position is flat, with the straps allowing the footbox to droop down...

for wing insulation, I've always just added a wool blanket to the inside, been good to me down to -15c or so

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep playing with it. I need to watch the video about the best pads. Tikker do you have a rec? I still don't see how to avoid some air under the knees given the weight of my butt pushing down the pad.

side note, @shug, while I was in Seattle this week I saw this and then got to tell my wife all about this guy who makes learning hammocks a lot of fun.

    what pad do you use?

I've got the exped synmat9, and it completely fills the pad pocket

unlike some others, I also like the pad as full as it can handle. some like to fill only 2/3 or 3/4 full, but I've always gone as firm as I can

in a gathered end, I've definitely had the space below knees issue, that I always solved by using an inflated dry sack under the knee

The Amok Fjol. I've heard good things about the exped synmats. Much different than the Fjol?

Same here on a GE. I use clothes stuff in a sack

I would wager that the amok folks looked very closely at the exped when designing the fjol. they're very similar pads (I'm pretty sure Jonas built the original draumr around the exped)
