    Giddings TX Annual Friend Trip

Once a year a group of friends and I go out to Giddings Texas to camp for a long weekend on a 600 acre cattle farm. The site is composed mainly of rolling hills, red clay river beds, and endless piles of fossilized palm and red chert broken up by mesquite and oak trees. This year we wound up there the second weekend of February.

Our first stop day one was in town at the City Meat Market, home to a righteous rack of ribs, and darn fine brisket. This is critical before hammocking. I'm not sure why or how, but it definitely improves the hang.

We said hi to the cows on the way in.

    And set up camp.

I set up between two oak trees, and got to climb to remove deadwood/widowmakers from above.

When not horizontal between two trees, we spent the time hiking and shooting clays. There are a pair of beautiful ponds on the property that wound up receiving some serious chair and brewski attention.

The weather was mild, the cows were pleasant, the coyotes were loud, and the wild hogs kept their distance and stayed polite. A good time was had by all. I hope y'all are finding some time to get out too!

Man! Brisket envy here! The site of it made me mist up a little bit.
Your camp is a far cry from the looks of Minnesota currently. Oh to see bare ground again.

    Looking awesome!
I think I have some brisket left in the deep freezer..... I might have to talk my kids into hammock camping this weekend now to prove your theory

Jake, to be fair brisket makes everything better, but I can tell from experience and rigorous testing that hammocks sleep better after some barbecue.

Shug, thanks for reminding me about snow. I'd forgotten that stuff existed in The Great State. Hope your hangs turn warm soon enough!

Had you been able to dispatch a few hogs, it may have been a perfect trip! They’re a real nuisance.
