    NC Uwharries Backpacking June 2022

Anyone interested in backpacking Uwharrie Trail Dutchman’s Creek figure8 loop.

We will meet at Yates Place Troy NC
Just over 21 miles in three days.
Not recommended for anyone with health conditions.

I’ll post trek here, about five days before our hike.
Probably go on a weekend with no rain forecast.

Some may opt for shorter miles or even car camping at Yates.

If you can only be off Saturday and Sunday, we can shorten figure8 loop and still do figure8 loop but with a shortcut, so it can be hiked in two days instead of three days.

I’ll look at weather forecast on Sunday and post our trek for following weekend. One day of rain and we are really camping, but rain all weekend and I’ll take a pass.

Our trek will be one weekend in June.
Probably first weekend in June with a pleasant weather forecast for following weekend.
I’ll post our trek on Sunday for the following weekend. So it could be any weekend in June.

Be aware, they did a controlled burn on the Dutchamn's Creek Trail side of the 24/27 TH about a month ago. Shouldn't really impact the plan, but part of the hike will look different.

No one sits around talking about that trip where it was 76 and sunny the whole time.

    NC Uwharries Backpacking June 2022

I called Forest Ranger, trail is open after controlled burn.
Can get black soot on shoes, pant cuffs, tree straps when camping in area of burn.

I don’t know how far up the controlled burn extends from 24/27 Dutchman’s Creek Trailhead.

We might not even be in section of controlled burn!?!? I dunno

If we go Saturday Sunday instead of Friday Saturday Sunday so that more people can go, then we will do an abbreviated version of Uwharrie Trail Dutchman’s Creek Trail figure8 loop.

The Saturday Sunday figure8 loop would be
    Park at Yates
    Go south on Uwharrie Trail
    Cross Big Island Creek
Continue south on Uwharrie Trail halfway up mountain
    Turn Left on Keyauwee Trail
Turn Left on Dutchman’s Creek Trail
Continue on Dutchman’s Creek Trail past the “crossroads” (middle of figure8 loop)
Past Little Island Creek and up the steep mountain with all the big rock boulders.
Past Beech Camp at triple crossing of Dutchman’s Creek
Turn Left on Uwharrie Trail north back to Yates spur trail

This shortcut version is (guessing) 15 miles
Can probably backpack in two days
Not sure where we would end up camping Saturday night. Probably near a creek?!?!?
If anyone else has any thoughts on camp sites, feel free to add to our itinerary.

With a larger group, it would be more fun to have a larger campsite, like Beech Camp or Fat Man’s Camp. But it looks like we will pass those sites at wrong time of day.

With smaller group, we can camp anywhere and still find enough trees for camping together.
I would like to camp near one of many creek crossings Saturday night to avoid carrying excess heavy water.

Doubtful for me Dave. More miles than this old body likes along with higher temps. Also have family coming around that time.

    Have fun!

Medical issues prevent me from hiking any distance for right now.....

But if my new Haven Safari hammock comes in before your designated weekend I'll plan on being at Yates Place to see you off and will still be there to welcome you back and use the weekend as a test of the new hammock. Any excuse for getting out in the woods and do some hanging!
