Ultralight packing

If I were you I would find something to store the hammock and the bag in that will give it some protection from water. After all that's you bed and your insulation for the night. You never know what will happen on the trail and at least you will have a dry bed and bag for the night. Trash bags, stuff sack,etc weigh almost nothing to begin with. Better safe than sorry.

I once slipped while rock hopping across a stream and fell flat on my back with my pack submerged in water. Soaked almost all my gear except for my hammock, sleeping bag, and other assorted items that were in stuff sacks.

What kind of scales do you guys have to weigh your packs? Any reccommendations, like a wall hanging, inexpensive scale?

I assume you are talking about a loaded pack; if that's the case I just go to the grocery store (Publix). They have scales in their stores so you can see how fat you are before shopping.

They are very accurate and I just drop my pack on it and see what it weighs. $0.00

Trying to balance my pack (empty) at home on my wee little digital scale was quite a sight. I think even the cats were laughing at me!

I bought a set of digital scale from Ebay for about $20. The will up to 35lbs in both grams and ounces.

I weigh myself without the pack, and then weigh myself wearing the full pack. Then I know what the pack weighs. <shrug>

Mine will only weigh up to 2lbs. So you know what that means. LOL That is right none of my gear weighs more than 2lbs. In fact none of my gear weighs more than a lb and a half.

Except for filled water containers? A liter of water weights 2.204lbs + container.

Perfect idea, thanks. I am going to check ebay now. Looking for something I can just hang in the garage.

Works for me, I have a 5lb postal scale to weigh individual items. I think a lot of people that weigh the pack at home would be suprised at what the pack weighs when they hit the trail.
