I have seen a picture somewere of making two tripods with a crossbar connection to top of one to the top of the other.
Scout projects including tree branches give me nightmares! I spend time scouting when I was younger- back when it was encouraged to go out with a hatchet and chop up all those poor trees and make tables hangers, racks, etc!
Hey scoutmasters of today, please tell me the Scouts have abandoned that practice for the sake of inching closer to NLT?!
Harpo, BSA has adopted and made a real big push in regards to LNT. They now have a position (boy not adult) as LNT trainer. They should be trained by their council and basically earn their LNT trainer certificate. His responsiblity is to make sure the Troop uses the LNT principles. We bring along Bamboo or 2x2's for the kids to make camp gadgets with. The Bamboo is harvested by one of the adults that has a brother who grows it on his property. BSA is trying to get the message out not to destroy trees to make lashing poles.
Zoobee, pickup some 2x2's and have the kids practice on them to see if they can make them work for the stand. That's a good pic Crutches found to copy off of.
We are using Bamboo . We do practice LNT. Thanks for the info.I'm hopeing it will hold up if not then, These could be my last post!!
Cool! I thought the BSA had to have moved towards LNT from the old ways, but never saw anything- I think what I saw were OLD scouts who grew up the old way and continue to use the old ways on their own at campgrounds.

Yes,some of the old scouts still practice some of the old ways. Several years ago, there was an instructor still teaching adults to dig a trench around the base of the tent, like we would do to keep the rain out of the old canvas wall (Baker) tents. The persons in the class to their benefit corrected him that this was not practiced anymore.Good for them!
I am glad to hear of the bamboo. Really try to get the ropes as tight as you can on those tripod lashings. Sisal or manilla rope seems to grab a lot better than nylon. The ridgepole connecting the tripods together should give it some strength and become more rigid in theory. Hope its a gentle fall if it does fail. Make sure to post pics and good luck. Hope ya'll have a good camporee!
OH! And I hope they get major points for making something like that ( In our realm this is a cool factor). And maybe you should figure out a way to stake down the tripods!
