Someone gave me this machine. It hums like a new one, but as you can see the top is missing. Can anyone direct me as to where I can get one, or is it just a boat anchor?
    thanks

I can't help you with a top, except to say you can probably use it without. All you need is a way to mount your spool of thread and rig up a guide to route the thread down to the tension adjuster. It doesn't need to be real fancy to be functional.

I may give that a try, but the the thought of hand-winding a bobbin doesn't sound fun.

I can't say this is true for all of the Sears/Kenmore machines, but I know that many of the Kenmore models were re-branded Singer machines. If not Singer, it was another major manufacturer that was re-branded.

Take a look at the tag that shows the Model/Serial number. It should provide some information that may indicate who the real manufacturer was. That should help you get the necessary information to locate the missing part.

You might also want to take the pic to some of the repair shops in your area. Even if they don't have the part, you may find a different machine that's complete, in working order and inexpensive enough to replace the one you have. Heck, try to barter what you have to lower the price of a complete one. A repair shop might be able to use it for parts. I love to swing a deal to save some cash.

It may be somewhat more complicated than that. Not being an engineer I can't say for sure. But the guide eyelets for the thread _may_ have an impact on the tension plates as any friction introduced into the system would increase the tension on the thread. It would certainly be worth the effort IMO but might require a fair amount of blind tinkering to get it "right". Winding the bobbin also requires tension on the thread to do it right so you will need to figure that out as well. Check on-line and you may be able to find threading charts for the machine.

It was my understanding that Kenmore was a rebranded White but of course these things could change depending on who gave Sears the best deal.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Some machines have bobbin winders on the side (mine does). Do you know what to look for? Can you take a picture of the side that the handcrank is on? If you have a bobbin spinner on the side, you can use your hands to tension while you fill the bobbin. I do that all the time when I use a large spool that doesn't sit on the machine.

One of the sewing centers around should have someone that performs maintenance on machines and there's a good chance that "someone," will have one lying around at their shop.

    Thanks for everyone's help!
I picked this up today for $50. Its a NELCO model 235F. Is anyone familiar with this machine? It seems to run great.
