I use a clone of a MollyMac gear hammock (made by KitSapCowboy). I typically set it up on seperate trees near the hammock, but I can suspend it right next to me and the hammock if needed. I store my pack in it, other stuff that I don't want right with me in the hammock.

I use a gear hammock from Simply Light Designs (SLD). I find it handy for storing the hammock, quilts, booties, pillows, stocking cap, & tarp for transport. My gear hammock has a zipper. I often set the trail runner shoes in or on the gear hammock to keep them off the ground. The advantage of the gear hammock is that it can be accessed while lying in the hammock.

I also have a pair of SLD Sunset saddle bags. I use on at the head end of two other hammocks for gear storage off the ground.

The gear hammock is pretty cheap and handy. A DIY version would be easy to make.

Ha! I have had more than one occasion of a slug in the shoe. Only the first time did I not know before I put it on (gross). I guess I'm just glad they are small northern woods slugs, not the Godzilla sized slugs I played with as a kid near the Virginia coast.

I'm feeling drawn between making a small silnylon shoe-shelf hammock for my ridgeline, or something similar to sling under the hammock. I've also considered a second tarp I have and setting up a separate gear outpost, but that has some weight disadvantages. I'm not always great about packing light, so trying to improve a little there.

I'll second the SLD gear hammock that has a zipper. Minimal weight penalty (123g) if that is your thing and I prefer having my gear off of the ground and within reach from my hammock. If I am carrying a chair, I'll use that instead. I did modify the suspension on it, though, so that it isn't attached to my hammock.

Between the two of us we have one from SLD w/ a zipper and waterproof fabric, a small gear sling that hangs from the ridgeline, both mine, and a gear hammock/pack cover that my lady got for free w/ a different gear order.
I use the little gear sling for things like, beanie, buff, maybe an extra layer, and occasional small items. The SLD gear hammock most often will hold clothes I took off or during the day (in extended camps) my TQ. It mostly hangs above me as I'm often too close to the ground for it to be comfortably under me. My lady's gear hammock usually hangs next to her, some times w/ a spreader bar or a different tree/attachment at one end. She can load that up w/ things I never knew you needed within arms reach.
Her footwear is definitely in there. She had her sandals taken, and chewed up, once so now they are NEVER left on the ground.
Oh, and she uses her camp chair as well to keep things of the ground.

Ive tried a gear sling and it just didnt click with me for some reason.

I opt for a ridgeline organizer and then just hang my pack off of my suspension under my tarp most of the time.
