    Sewing Machine

Recommendations for a sewing machine to sew up nylons and polys? I'm looking at making my own tarps and quilts, so that's what it will be used for primarily.

    Thanks for your help!

For that type of material you really don't need anything more than a home machine from wal-mart. They will even do light webbing without too much fuss. If you are going to be sewing multilayers or fabric/webbing it may pay to have a commercial machine, but in reality you could pick up most machines off craigslist for a song and they would cover everything you need it to do.

metal gears are your friend. plastic, (especially old-aka 'vintage'- plastic) will break right in the middle of the important piece of gear you really need to finish before the trip this weekend.
    trust me on this. KM

Yes, the crazy thing is you can buy a made in USA all metal machine for less then you can buy a plastic one at satanmart.

Personally, I'd ask friends and family if they have one laying about that needs a good home, or check the local classifieds/craigslist.

Then check the local sewing repair shops, they generally have machines they refurbished that are solid, and cheaper than new plastic machines...

I bought my Plastic Geared Brother (3 year old machine) that sells for $120 for $30 off Craigslist.

Look for a Singer 401 or if ya really like retro a Singer 503 Rocketeer. The 503 is so cool. Google them. Both have metal gears, made in the 50's and 60's and "MADE IN THE USA". I paid $45 for my portable 401 and $50 for my 503 with a cabinet. I read that they would cost about $2500 in todays money. Look in thrift shops, yard sales, craigs list, sew machine repair shops, ask old ladies in fabric shops (about sew machines that is). You would pay out the nose for one on ebay.
