You can do the same thing with a full ridge line.

When you wrap the tree and secure, just have the point where you secure well away from the tree instead of right against the tree. In fact when you keep the point where you secure the line further away from the tree, it is easier to secure the line whether you are using a truckers hitch, friction knot, Figure 9, whatever. This is because the further you are from the tree, the forces on the line are more in-line with the line. It's harder to tie knots when the forces on the line are pulling perpendicular to the line.

You end up with the "V" any size you want.
Those who sacrifice freedom for safety, have neither.

I use the single ridgeline with "S" beiners attaching the tarp to prussiks. It allows me to center the tarp better.

That is some fine software, thank you for the product name.

How are those working out? I havent done anything with them yet.

I can see how they could replace the toggle on the first end... But the other end seems like a wash compared to a figure 9.

Very nice illustration! I will try this on the weekend. I'm just about done with the HH tarp attached to the hammock line.

Even Tom Hennessy doesn't rig his tarp and hammock from the same line anymore. Would work nice if it wasn't for the tarp sag once you enter the hammock.

I just love your Hammock illustrations! They really make it so easy to help my friends understand this sleep system. All I can say is... thank you, and we want more!

I do it that way most of the time...I just wrap the cord around the tree, then trucker's hitch it to the D-ring. It ends up separated just like your illustration. I used nite-ize for the first time last trip and I'll probably keep using them...just a bit more convenient than the trucker's hitch in normal conditions, but when my fingers are really cold or the trees are too far apart for the trucker's hitch on the D-ring, it'll be a lot better.
I've used those nite-ize figure 9 knots thing but still prefer a truckers hitch. No extra weight or something else to break, carry, or loose. Line goes around tie point, trucker's hitch tightens guy line, and I go night, night.

Let us know how those figure 9's hold up under extreme cold.
