I usually bring a good book or have a movie downloaded to my phone to watch. A lot of times I'll just relax and listen to an album or podcast too.

Other times I'll bring an AM radio and mess around with antenna wire trying to see how distant of a station I can get. Or I fumble around with bushcraft stuff like carving wooden hooks or using antiquated fire starting methods.

But usually I'm tired enough it's a book and I'm out in 20 minutes regardless.

Audio books are a good way to "read" a book while remaining wrapped up in your quilt as you fall asleep. You can set the timer so it will stop if/when you doze off. Phone stays in the warmth as well and no screen usage, so it minimizes battery impact.

Shoot, I just go to bed. By 6:30 I'm ready to sleep. Something about the dark in winter makes me want to hibernate.

+1 on a slingshot. light weight and good fun. Audiobooks on the phone are great. Widdling something out of a piece of wood is also fun. I also fish when I can, fresh fish for breakfast or dinner can't be beat. Often if I think I've got a lot of time to kill I'll bring a wood burning stove instead of an alchy. Good therapy collecting and processing wood, cooking your dinner, and keeping it going afterwards as a small campfire alternative. I like the idea of practicing knots as well, might be something I'll try next time. Mostly it's you getting comfortable with hanging out with you. Think of it as mental journaling or indirect meditation. Recharges the mental batteries. Good luck.

I go snipe hunting. Been doing it since I was a young scout. One of these days I'm a gonna catch me one of those elusive creatures!

I usually download some movies and podcasts on my phone but recently picked up a musical instrument to take along.
Harmonica's seemed cool but that can get pretty loud. So I did some looking around and saw some videos with the Kalimba.
It's great. I grabbed a 17 key Kalimba. Not as small as a harmonica but it's smaller than a ukulele.
