    NC backpacking 24 27 Trailhead Mt Gilead NC 27306 May 31 June 1 and 2 2024

    Possible plans
Park at 24 27 Trailhead, Mt Gilead NC midday Friday
Hike north on Dutchman’s Creek Trail until sundown
Saturday morning break camp and hike to Beech Camp for Saturday night.

Might get to camp with anyone who has parked at Yates and opted for a short miles hike to Beech Camp.

My second post describes same sand plans.

    A Phantom guessing itenerary

    Late start midday Friday
    Park 24 27 Trailhead Friday
North on Dutchman’s Creek Trail until sunset and camp along a creek

Saturday morning coffee, and hike to Beech Camp
    to camp there Saturday night
Possibly camp with anyone who has hiked in from Yates—Saturday night at Beech Camp.

Sunday morning coffee and hike back to my car at 24 27 Trailhead

This sand plan can accommodate both short mile and long mile campers.

Beech Camp is located on Dutchman’s Creek Trail on the second of three crossings of Dutchman’s Creek.
Dutchman’s Creek Trail crosses Dutchman’s Creek three times in rapid succession

    NC backpacking 24 27 Trailhead Mt Gilead NC 27306 May 31 June 1 and 2 2024

Last night camped at Little Island Creek, slept a long time, now at top of Lick Mountain.
Might be at Beech Camp around noon.
If no hammock friends there, I will probably continue at least to Big Island Creek, maybe camp there tonight and finish Sunday mid afternoon.

Saw a few trail runners run by during morning coffee. And there was one couple with full camping backpacks strolling while I drank coffee. They were going in opposite direction on trail. They had both gone down Lick Mountain without aid of hiking poles! Lucky they are still in one piece.

A fit trail runner can complete 21 mile figure8 in one full day.
A motivated backpacker can complete trail in two days.
And then there’s Phantom, three days, both first and last days shorter days.

If you missed this one, we will be backpacking in Uwharries this summer. As weather heats up, we will probably have quick overnights with old man short miles, and no Lick Mountain.

Hiked up Lick Mountain, then Beech Camp, no one there. Hiked to Uwharrie Trail south past figure8 crossroads. And was going to camp at Big Isand Creek….mosquitoes were swarming at BIC, I continued onwards to 24 27 Trailhead and am driving home.
Today could hear faint buzzing of cicadas, the most of them have already started their next 17 year chapter.
Trail had both day hikers, trail runners, and backpackers.

Weather was perfect, next time I’ll carry bug spray
The bug spray I applied Friday am was wearing off

21 miles in two days, old man is tard&happy.

Chappy, I’d be a lot less sore today if I’d camped one more night before finishing. Mosquitoes skeeerd me limping onward

Nice report PG. good on you for finishing it. Hopefully I can join the next one although this time of year the cooler air at elevation in the Pisgah and NC Balds sounds more appealing.

Sorry I missed you PG! I decided to go to Yates at the last minute Saturday evening to do the upper portion of the figure 8 loop on Sunday.

I may have missed you but I did run into this guy near the Uwharrie/Dutchman's intersection late Sunday morning....
