    Awkward and Uncomfortable??

So I recently bought a Hennessy Expedition Asym, and during my first hang, I found it hard to get comfortable in. My problem seemed to be that in the head area of the hammock. I found that when I lied down the bottom of the hammock surrounding my head would rise up like a wall beside my head. It in a way engulfed my head. I'm not sure that this makes sense, but it was quite annoying. I'm not sure if this is a common thing with hammocks or it is just the hammock I have. I have thought about using a sleeping pad to help flatten out the bottom of the hammock, but I have heard that it makes it quite uncomfortable. Any suggestions?

Lots of potential causes ... how about this? Rig your hammock as you do, check and see if it still causes this problem. If it does post some pictures of the hang and of you in the hammock. Might be able to figure it out ... I've never had the problem you're describing. Also ... how tall are you? The expedition is max'd for a six foot person. I'm right at six and I don't have any issues with it.

Check out the diagram here - general rule of thumb is to hang the hammock with that 30 degree angle on the suspension ropes. If your ridgeline is tight as a banjo string before you get in, it's hung too tight.

Also... were you laying inline with the center of the hammock, or putting your feet out to the right with your head off to the left of center?

Good point, lay diagonal, feet to right, head to left. It should make for plenty of room. And, if you have a SS undercover, make sure it is not facing "upside down" or backwards.

I have never seen this illustration before. It shows the angle to be 30 degrees from vertical. I thought it was supposed to be 30 degrees from horizontal.

You are correct. The general rule of thumb is 30* from horizontal. Perhaps the diagram can be edited to correct that. But then again it is only a rule of thumb and not a hard and fast figure. Perhaps the artist finds a steeper sag more comfortable.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

It is supposed to be 30 from horizontal - huh. Hope he is around to fix the drawing, it's otherwise a very good illustration.

Here is the correct illustration. It's located in the article section.
