IMO, everything being equal (mostly weight), I'll take the bigger tarp because it improves my non-hammock time (cooking, relaxing).Originally Posted by FireFlyburns

Ditto, except I don't care too much about ounces. I have a clark with its pitiful stock tarp. The weather shield is great, for other reasons than just keeping out the rain, and while the tarp can do a fine job of keeping the hammock dry it's too small to do much else. A new tarp is one more thing I'm going round & round on trying to make a decision on. I'd like a nice catenary cut tarp in the 10x11 range, with built in doors, but I can't quite bring myself to spend upwards of $300 for a big piece of nylon.
Im personally all about the huge tarp for 4 season camping. I like the coverage on windy rain/snowy days. On hot days just pull back the doors or go porch style. Ive recently switched from tent to hammock and just feel more comfortable with a big coverage tarp. It gives me a false sense of security in the woods

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.
I do both. I have a OES Deluxe (Spinn) for 3-season and I rig my poncho underneath as it also adds warmth. In the winter I use a JRB 10x11 and still use my poncho for warmth. Since I already carry the poncho for rain gear, it doesn't add any extra to my weight.
I agree with tgreening on the Clark tarp, they are way to small for anything but keeping the hammock dry. I have a CJH NX-200 and have changed the tarp out with a BWDD WD tarp from SCLittlefield, he is not making tarps right now. I know it is a weight penalty to some but I look at it this way. I have all things covered with this tarp. It works with any hammock I may be in, CJH or ENO DN. I can close the doors if there is bad weather or to cut the wind down and if the weather is nice I can fold the doors in and go to "porch" mode. Love this tarp!!!!!!!
Large tarp is almost always lighter than a small tarp and WS...
Prevailing fog conditions, UK, WA State, GA mtns in spring is the only time a Weather Shield makes good sense IMHO... Even then, near full tentability of large tarps is pretty sufficient.

I haven't used a huge tarp yet, but expect I will like it. However, for the Mt. Rogers hang I made a hammock cover that extended to the ground and used it with a 3-season tarp with enclosed ends. The setup handled a 15" snowfall better than tarps that extended all the way to the ground, because the snow had a place to go when it slid off the tarp. I've since put a floor in the hammock cover (tiny footprint), so this will be my cold-weather rig.
