    Joann Fabric Ripstop Nylon

I just picked up 2 batches (at 50% off) of 6yds ripstop nylon from Joann's Fabrics and it is different from the ripstop that i ordered a while ago from Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics. One side is shiny I think this is coating and the other side isnt. I did the blow test and cant blow threw it. To me it doesnt really matter but i was planning on making another hammock with some of it and if its coated i will scrap that for some other ideas.

If it is like the fabric that I've gotten from them then I'm pretty sure it is just a fabric stabilizer to make sewing easier. Take a little patch and wash it, then do the blow test. Goodluck.

Personally, I've never seen any coated ripstop at any of the local JoAnn's. What you may have is calendered ripstop. The local stores have ripstop in regular and calendered. The calendering process makes one side shiny and seems to make the weave tougher to blow through. It should also be down-proof. My first hammock used this material and it worked fine.

Same here. It may be ripstop, but it's not silnylon.

Found a definition for "calendering," just for what it's worth:
"Calender or calendering. A finishing step where the cloth is subject to heat and pressure to improve bias stability."

I know its ripstop from the square pattern on it and how the one side feels like the ripstop i got from OWF.

The washing part i will try later.

But if it is coated i think i will try and make the Jeffs gear hammock. Could i use for part of a sleeping bag? I think it would be best on the top mixing in some breathable ripstop.

I have used a lot of the JoAnn's RS, as it is usually the only local material to be found, and, though I can't breath through the weave of the material, and, probably won't ever wash it, it still lofts up perfectly. Not sure how. But, if it ever got wet, that would no doubt be a big problem. JoAnn's RS is rather heavy. I contacted them about camo fabric, but, no discernable understanding of the demand in their reply. Some people just don't get the importance of hammocking. Yet. But, they are opening a new store here, so we don't have to drive 30 miles to the other ones. (30 miles is a long way to us New Englanders)

    Joann Ripstop

I have seen PU coated ripstop at JA before.. that being said, is a pretty obvious difference, you'd know it.

The stuff that's just shiny on one side is as previous posters mentioned, calendered.

When a fabric is calendered how does that help the fabric besides making one side shiny???

The calendaring process flattens out the nylon fibers which helps to fills in the tiny gaps between the weave. This makes it more downproof, among other things. Use it with the shiny side inside a quilt.

Also, depending on the use of the material, it may be very important to get fabric with DWR coating. This would be appropriate for outside apparel or under quilts.
