To have things even more spicy - my mother was born in Grunwald - just a mile away from both major battlefields (first battle in 1410, the other in 1944).
Man, things were really crazy here. Grudziadz, where I live now, was (and still is) a "military camp", during WWII there was a battle in the nearby forest. And - when going to walk the dog or to brew a coffee and test the gear in the woods, I see sometimes someone with metal detector. Bunkers, craters, mass graves in the woods - just a normal state of things here.
The more or less bitter, complicated history of XX century was for me pretty much the only thing leading to understanding the identity of the place I live in.

Hej Czesc. I lived in Poland for 2 years. Learned a little of the language and culture. I lived in a Ludz, Zabrze, Opole, Zielona Gora and Warsaw. I also traveled around a bit to other cities. I never did get to see the North though. The closest I got to Grudziadz is Poznan, sorry.

Mazury is really charming land. And Białowieża Forest. All the rest - well, just like southern regions.
And - I really love Poznań, its quite like kind of place I would love to live in: full of young people, not so small and not too big, and whole year there is filled up with cultural events.

Yeah, I was in Poznan for New Years 1998/99. Crazy ! Just utterly Crazy!
