What role does your Sleep System play in your Clothing

A spin off this thread http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=15176

I'm thinking about getting a wearable quilt from the jacks to use as a topquilt. It will also double as my only insulation for my upper half while in camp. I have been on a few trips where people dont bring a coat/jacket/sweatshirt but curl up in their quilt or wrap their sleeping bag around them as they are sitting by the fire and temps begin to drop. It seems like a good way to keep your pack weight and bulk down. Is this a popular thing to do?
What are the pro's and cons to using your bag/quilt as your coat?

I made a wearable quit a while back. I used synthetic insulation & pieced stuff together to get it like I wanted it, so it turned out heavier than I had hoped. But I liked the functionality of it.
I have talked about doing another one, but never got around to it.

More pictures on pages 16 & 17 of my gallery.

My thoughts are that I may not want it to be my only coat or normal insulation, but an extra layer of comfort/insurance for those times you find it hard to get warm. But it would only be for in camp & not on the trail or in the rain, because it would still be my top quilt, requiring thoughtful use.

That said, I think it's a good feature to be able to wear your top quilt.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

I've been thinking about making me a light summer UQ that would double as a vest. As SlowHike said, this would be a backup - if the temperature suddenly turned cool, I would have it as an extra layer to keep me warm. I'm still trying to convince myself that its worth the extra effort to design and put together such an UQ. And when used both ways there are usually compromises to be made.

That's one of the main reasons I almost always have the JRB No Sniveler with me on every trip. I just recently stopped taking it on winter trips b/c I have thick enough underquilts. For three-season trips, I normally don't take a jacket...I hike till I'm tired, then cook and go to bed. For that in-between time before I get in, I just use the NS.

It helps to have a rain jacket that's big enough to put over the NS so I don't worry about spilling food on it, snagging it on a branch, getting it wet, etc.

    Here are some pics:

And here's a picture of me with the NS under the Packa...it was about 14F here.

I second the rain jacket. I wouldn't want to get my NS all smoked up from a campfire or spill anything on it.
