Camping is going to be back in the swamp, so I'd make sure you bring something with a bugnet to hang in atleast at TD.

I would love to join for at least a day hike. Will watch as it gets closer and see if the stars align for me

Can't do the TD pre-hike, but I'll be bringing a few scouts taking Backpacking Merit Badge & a couple adult leaders down to Damascus. We will all be hanging in our hammocks.

Question: Anybody know of the best "scouting appropriate" location to hang? I would ideally like to keep the boys separated from most of the "wilder" evening activities.

I can't think of a better place for them to hang than with a few members of HF. This would also give them a chance to look over some different hammock & tarp set-ups.

I'll be doing option 1. I was planning on starting on Sunday or Monday, but now I'm not sure. My preference is to start Monday/Sunday, but I've never solo backpacked. Anyone doing Option 1 needing to shuttle, let me know and we can team up. Any ideas meet up times for either day in the AM?

I've never done the AT/Trail Days, so it's all new to me. I noticed that Thursday is when the activities really kick off instead of Friday. I'm assuming with the 9.4 miles into Damascus on Friday we'll be limiting our activities of Trail Days to primarily Saturday and Sunday. Please don't take my questions as negativity, but rather clarification.

TroutehCuss I can always be convinced to do more days on the trail. Do you hike big mileage days, or do you do small days?

TroutEhCuss, I'm starting with group with Option 2, but leaving myself open to hiking a longer day on Thursday so I don't have to do a 9 mile day on Friday. Would like to do shorter day on Friday so I can get into Damascus earlier and with more energy. Since it's my first time at TD, I want to take in as much of activities as I can.

I do small to medium miles. I want to enjoy the journey. I have eight days off and had originally planned to start hiking on Sunday or Monday. I haven't had a vacation this long in about eight years. I wanted to get in at Trail Days either later on Thursday or early Friday. I want to enjoy my first time... when I get around to doing my thru-hike I don't want Trail Days to be a big deal.

I hike a 2.5-2.75 miles/hr on reasonably flat ground, but going up hills really slows me down.

I'm trying to find a virginia pdf of the AT handbooks, so I can narrow it down.
