Cooking Shelter

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some advice for tarps. I am looking for a cooking shelter and have run into several tarps but I don't know which way to go. I like the eno profly but I'm not sure if it is big enough for a cooking shelter and have no idea about the rest. I'm looking for something that is sturdy, fairly light and hopefully around $50 to $60. I might get a hammock in the future but right now I'm looking for a tarp that I can bring backpacking to cook under and possibly hang out a bit under. It doesn't need to be massive, just big enough to shelter two people from the rain while sitting and cook. Not looking for a car camping setup so that is why it has to be fairly light. The budget is a little bit negotiable but the closer to it the better. Here are the tarps I've run into so far.

If it matters I don't want a tarp that is massive, just one that can cover two from the rain comfortably. It rains in the NW a lot and so it will get a lot of use

It also isn't a huge cooking setup, just a whisperlite and a 2L pot.

The GG tarp may not be the lightest of the bunch, but for about $20 you can't go wrong. Mine has proven to be weather tight, sturdy and dependable.

The Kelty Noah tarps are not the lightest, but they are durable and large enough for what you want. Check out Arson's video here

I have the GG 12x12 tarp set up in the rain..last night thru the next three nights of rain.
I am AMAZED in the quality of the GG tarp. It is light weight and it is WATERPROOF.
I didn't believe that a tarp as good looking, with as mamy seams and tie out points would be dry.

****! It is a marvelous tarp.

For $20 WOW!!!!
I wish they had this in camo for $20.

This is a fine size for two people. You may have to break one side of the tarp down to acconodate wind driven rain.

I have the Funky Forest tarp as well as a Kelty Noah9, they both offer alot of coverage.

Campmor sells the lightweight silnylon Equinox tarps. The 8 X 10 is $60. They also have larger sizes.

Has anyone done a comparison between the Kelty noah 12 and the GG tarp? and on that note to rigidpsycho: which of those two are better quality? Also any opinions on the other tarps?

I really have not used any of the 12x12 tarps. The Funky forest tarp is 10'3"x10'3". The Kelty Noah 9 is pretty close to the same size. I use the Funky Forest as my go to tarp since my hammock is 10' long and I have alot of coverage. Since getting the Funku Forest I used the Kelty in along time. I have pictures of them both in my gallery.
