Thread: Truly Ugly Tarp

    Truly Ugly Tarp

I'm always struck with the nice tight tarps in pictures posted here. My approach is...different.

I use a HH with a Cooke Custom Sewing tarp overhead. I think the tarp is 10 by 12. I run the ridge line through the loops that run along the midline, and use some prussiks to keep the tarp taught along the ridgeline. That's the ONLY part that's taught however.

I tie out the sides with single lines on loops midway down the sides. These lines aren't particularly taught. I tie the pairs of loops together along the length of the ends to close the ends.

The end result...a truly ugly tarp, but it seems like it'd hold up in a hurricane. Does anyone else do anything like this?

CCS makes some awesome tarps. The one that Boundary water hammocker is talking about is a tundra tarp. From what I have heard they make them colorful for use in rescue situations. I found a picture from their website that shows one.

Tight lines equals a tight tarp. Pull a bit more on your tieouts, till the tarp does not have any wrinkles.
CCS has a great reputation. I've never heard a complaint about their products.

Wow these tarps look nice, I was not aware of Cooke Custom Sewing tarps.
Talk about tie outs alot of possibilities.
Boundary Water do you have any real complaints of these tarps? If not I may concider getting one of these just for the versitility.

PKT...I have no complaints at all regarding the CCS tarp. I think the quality is great! I don't know about the weight compared with other tarps, though. I'm not into ultra-light camping.

Also, someone mentioned the colors...mine is plain old green. It blends in well with the landscape.

i know what you mean guy with a really long name,my tarp is seldom pulled ramrod straight, especially in winter.i do not often use stakes, just wrap or tie of to a handy sapling or branch, blackberry bush, half rotten log, anything that is close to the correct area.tarp tensioners,i go natural for that.just lay a downed branch accross my semi taght tarp line and walla line is now tensioned.,or tie off to a springy branch or sapling.
i have not got wet yet and my tarp has made it through some mighty windy nights.

That's good, it's nice to have another quality maker of tarps to add to the list.
I glad you can get it a solid color too the ones shown on the site are a bit ugly.

    Welcome to another 'Consinite!

I have the same CCS 10x12 tarp in Silnylon. I've been using CCS tarps for about 8 years with no problems.

I get a taught pitch every time. The only way on this large tarp is too use all the tie-outs and apply a lot of tension to each one after initial set up. When the tarp gets damp, you have to re-tension the tie outs. I prefer Kelty Triptease rope with taught-line hitches. I attach the ridge lines directly to the tarp tie-outs along the ridge seam.

Here is the tarp (with a JRB bridge hammock) in light snow:

Here it is after 22" of wet snow!!:

Even though it looks a little saggy, it's still pretty taught (no flapping).

Here it is set up in calm conditions:

And here it is set up in a more horizontal fashion in high winds:

This past weekend I had it set up with poles as a troop dining fly and it withstood high winds and rain just fine.
Not all who wander are lost.
