Does anyone here use silk sleeping bag liners? Some product descriptions say they add "some" warmth and other claim ratings up +10* to your current sleep setup. I'd like to see what members here have found. Do they actually add a full 10* or is it only a slight difference.
YMMV. They'll keep you warmer than if you had none. You can use it alone if it gets warm enough, and it keeps the dirt and oil off of your sleeping bag and on the silk...which is easier to clean.
i cut a head hole and two arm holes in the bottom of mine and wear it like a night shirt. easier with a hammock.

I had a silk sleeping bag liner from my tarp/tent days and tried it in my hammock. I always ended up fighting with it all night long just trying to keep it in a position so I could use it. When I would get it right... I could tell that I was warmer. So I've now given the silk bag liner to my husband (still a tent-er!!) and I've bought some silk fabric. I lined the underside of my top quilts with the silk and I've cut one piece and made a top sheet out of it. The silk added to my summer down quilt has made that quilt too hot to use in the summer!! It's fine for spring/fall though. I'm starting my testing of using just the silk sheet with a summer UQ. If this works (and I don't see why it wont) I'll be able to drop some weight from my pack. Summer quilt 12oz, silk sheet 5.8 oz. If it's a cool night I can always zip up my weathershield and/or wear more clothes.

I've used one before, and really anything that traps air, slows heat loss, and adds another layer, will be warmer.
Mine was a simple sheet, used as a topquilt, and kept me warm at 65 degrees, indoors tho! I did have a uq in place. Never monkeyed with it outdoors, I just add a layer of clothing, normally. Hard to multi-purpose the sheet. My poncho is modded to work as an over cover, either directly on top of my quilt, or over the ridgeline.
Be it silk, poly taffetta, or lightweight nylon, any extra layer will improve your temp. rating, IMO.
The "nightshirt" idea would be a easier task in the hammock, considering how slippery a quilt against some silk would be. clever.
Can't beat silk against the skin, tho.!!

I've used them in my sleeping bags before for keeping the bag cleaner and for a margin of added warmth ... but still carry them now for sleeping in some of the third world hotel beds I encounter!
