The bat hammock might be the best of both worlds. It looks like it will work as a tree hammock or a portaledge, and it's half the price of the next cheapest solution. It still has that single suspension point though. I guess that's what I liked about the Treeboat. It has four suspension points. If one limb or one strap failed, you'd still be up there, and the safety line would keep you from spilling.

Six attachment points with a single suspension point. I'll tell you, there was not a minute that night that I did not think about that single suspension point...especially when the wind hit.

So you hang off a cliff on that? Think I would soil myself... not a climber by any means, I think ladders are evil enough.. so you hang that "ledge"/hammock on the side of a mountain from a crack in the rock and try to sleep? I'm a restless sleeper when I'm comfortable in my bed much less on the side of a mountain in a cot from heck. Think I just learned more about climbing than I will ever care to again. And like the others say what happens when you have to go? New record for world highest waterfall?

Bombs away! Actually in many popular areas like Yosemite you are required to um pack out everything you pack in as it were.

As I mentioned, I've used one, but "sleep" would be an overstatement....and a pee bottle is pretty much mandatory up there. I've slept in a secured bivy with "some" ledge, but the portaledge was the worst. Still, that bat hammock looks interesting.

I'd never though of camping IN a tree. That sort of opens a whole new dimension to the woods.

Redwood trees are tall and straight, and limbs at 90d, and people have enjoyed climbing them for reasons other than topping. I believe some of the arborist style of movment. I used to do some redwood tree work, and at those altitudes, I can guarantee that if I decide to hang overnight in a tree, I will be top roped and my hammock suspension won't be 1/8 amsteel...

I think that thing uses spreader bars. 4 pounds 10 ounces is a little much for me. I think I will stay 1 foot off the ground for a 1.5 pound hammock.

The bat hammock perhaps does not look the most comfy of hammocks though I must say I find it an interesting concept only having one tree to find for hanging.

I am a little surprised this Bat contraption hasn't become even a little popular here on Hammock forums..I expected some members to buy them and sing it's praises starting a make your own diy version for otheres etc.

If you look at Toms website you get the impression he is marketing this product mainly for climbers rather than forest use I may be wrong here.
