First off: don't be afraid to use the "s" word . . . sewing.

Sewing is easy: plug in machine and stomp on the pedal. That being said, sewing properly is not very difficult but does have a learning curve. Like many of the above posts, Revs videos helped me a lot; especially the sections on the different types of hems and seams used in gear. Learn how to thread the machine and set the tensions first. My advise would be to start on scraps of denim. This is very easy to sew. Next move to a lighter weight cotton and play with that. If you start off with thin nylon (especially 1.1 ounce silnylon) you will be using the other "S" word A LOT.
