I suppose I'm being thick. I still can't wrap my brain around the pleats on the outer fabric. If you cut a differential then take up a pleat, doesn't is defeat making it differential?

Either way, I'm about to go over to HammockGear.com and order my down. I've got to figure it out soon.

What's the worst that happens if I pleat the inside, but not the outside?

Personally, I would pleat the inner and outer by the same amount.

Also, I don't think you would need to pleat every baffle. If one wanted to be a little lazy, probably every other baffle would do the job.

I'm going to pleat every baffle(the math just works out well). I just can't understand why you need them on the outside - and I really like to understand stuff as much as I like to do it.

Remember, the pleats extend only a short length from the ends, so the majority of the quilt body is in a differential shape.

The purpose of the inner-layer pleats is solely to form the bathtub shape. The outer-layer pleats have a two-fold purpose: first, they must take up enough width to match the effect of the inner pleats, and second they must take up the additional fabric from the outer differential so that the ends of both pieces are the same width for sewing closed.

I just finished my underquilt using a differential cut and pleats for the bathtub shape. Starting with the inner layer I added 1in x 8in pleats at the head and 2in x 18in pleats at the foot. I made seven baffles 2in tall. Following Dutch's suggestion, to the outer layer width I added 1in per baffle and 2in per side. That's an 11in differential. To the outer layer I pleated the head with 2in x 8in pleats per baffle. The foot was pleated with 3in x 18in baffles. Near the corners on each end I added 2in x 5in pleats to take up the 2in side walls. So, you see the baseline pleat dimensions of 1in x 8in and 2in x 18in were just to form the bathtub shape. Additional fabric was taken up in the outer pleats so that the end hems would match.

    Okay

I haven't added the suspension yet; still deciding on how to do it. Once I can string it up I'll post pics to show the bathtub shape. It isn't fully lofted yet because I had to stuff the last channels with wet down. The "down eductor" only works so well. I'll post comments on that thread soon. (The chair in the background was another project of mine.)

    Village,
That was a superb explanation of the pleats! And a shining example ... nice quilt! You must try to come to the Texas hang in Faifield next month to show us your work first hand

nice explanation Village, and nice Quilt! Wow, this UQ business is complicated!! I was hoping to make one this week, but I think I need to see one in real life and take lots of pic (and ask lots of questions).

    Good job, though, I'm jealous.

Dang nice quilt Village. I like the long pleats and my have to try that. I also like the way they are longer on one end.
    Peace Dutch
