That is inspired, I like it.

I imagine those trees don't need much protection (with a substantial cork layer and large diameter).

I'd be inclined to make slings for smaller diameter trees and use extensions for the big pines. In any case, I imagine 50% coverage for such large trees is more than enough.

I don't mean to dissuade you from your original idea either, but it's hard to beat 15.5 g/m. Knots aren't necessary; i.e., terminate each individual line with eye splices and serve them together.

I'm going to follow your advice, Albert. I thought to myself lastnight after I posted if full straps were really necessary as the force is spread over such a wide area on these huge trunks.

1 and 1.5 metre straps it is then. All sewn with longitudinal stitching at 11 threads per inch, thanks to your strap post. Ill keep the fishing braid on the spool, and haul a monster carp out with it.

    Thanks for yor help.

I used a similar ratio for while but I've come to prefer 3:4.

    Good fishing.

Make your own pack. Make each of the lower strap halves attach with a permanent loop too the pack so that you can remove the lower strap ends off the pack when you get to camp and use those ends as tree straps and the pack as your food bag for hanging.

One can also give up the pack and use the hammock in its place.

I like versatility but sometimes specialised solutions are more useful to me.

My tree slings tend to get rather nasty, covered in sap and so on; not what I want to use for pack straps.
