    DIY lightweight pocket saw MK2....

    After success with my first saw/shiv on my previous thread;

    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=16274

    I've tried to improve it.

    The business end is now a far more aggressive 9" wood blade ( I use these blades at work in my sabre saw, they are really quick cutters)

    The polymorph blade mounting is slightly shorter, the handle is drilled for grip and weight reduction and the alu hex bolt is slotted so it can be done up with a knife/stick/screwdriver/key ring.

    Total weight is 82 grams. 2 grams heavier than my previous saw, but will cut quicker and bigger.

    I was going to make the handle out of carbon fibre, but didn't trust the mounting for strength.

    If you've got hollow carbon fiber tubing at hand, why not find piece of solid aluminum that will slip down into the carbon fiber snug then glue it in place? After that, drill and tap out your holes that hold the saw blade in place.

    The carbon tubing I have isnt quite big enough to accept the saw blade into the handle, and I have no solid alu bar.

    It is a good idea though, as the blade can easily be sheathed.

    Watch this space, Im off to build a Mk 3 'Fulminated' version.

    I've found that as carbon fiber tubes age, they can give off splinters, so you might need some sort of covering for the handle. That's working with arrow blanks, though, which are too small a diameter anyway. Ski poles often have a smoother surface; you could cut up an old or broken one.

    I remembered an old piece of repaired carbon fibre fishing pole section I had.

    I had covered it in an extra layer of carbon fibre and then whipped it with monofilament fishing line, bonded in place with epoxy. It seems plenty strong and rigid enough,would provide lots of grip and should be relatively splinter free if broken , so I made a 'Fulminated' MK3 saw.

    I bonded the saw blade into polymorph again, as the alu bolts and alu section I have weigh more than the polymorph.

    It weighs 76 g with the sheath. The carbon handle weighs 10g, the polymorph weighs 10g, the sheath weighs 12g.

    Thanks for the advice guys.
