Did I score at the Wal Marts?

    Hi Folks,

I'm new to the forum -- just made one other post over on the Bridge Hammock thread. Anyway, I've been reading a lot about making hammocks. I went to the Wal Marts today, and found what looks like ripstop. I picked up 10 yrds, 60 inches wide. If my math is close, thats like 16.66 sq yrds. The total weighs about 2 lbs, or about 1.9 oz per yd. So, do you think it could possibly be 1.9 ripstop nylon? Here is a picture -- don't you love the snowboarder pattern? If you think it is, I'll probably go back in the morning and get the rest of it.

    Regards,

yep, it's hard to miss ripstop.
Since you weighed it, now you know exactly what it is.
However, the only other factor is if it is coated in polyurethane.
If it is, one side will be pretty shiny and feel like there is a coating...
You could test this by putting the fabric over a cup and pour water.
If it goes through it's not coated.

another quick test to see if it has any kind of treatment, as in durable waterproof repellent (DWR), is to stretch it across your mouth & breathe in.
if you breathe freely through it, then it's probably not had any kind of treatment.
if you can breathe in through it but it takes effort, chances are it has been treated in some way to repel water to some degree.
if you can't breathe in at all (as if it were plastic) it's probably water proof, or pretty close to it.
if i'm off base on that, i'm sure someone will point it out. ...tim

Looks like coated 1.9 oz ripstop

If I breathe real hard (like blowing up a water balloon) i can get air through it. I tipped a cup of water over, and it sealed it pretty good, but it started to drip around the edges after about 30 seconds. Just feeling it, I'm not sure I'd want it for a tarp. I'm guessing this is coated 1.9 oz? So, would this be good material for a hammock body?

it sounds like it would work fine for a cold weather hammock... good wind resistance w/ enough breath-ability to let water vapor escape.
and a cool pattern. i've not seen that before.

Sounds like it has a DWR coating -- and that would be fine for a hammock.
