zipper mod or no? without the zipper mod i'd say when you go to ground just do your favorite tarp rig maybe consider an alternate tarp or at least a separate tarp ridge line to make this easier. the good news is that above tree line the bugs won't be so bad, so you'll probably be alright without a net. the JMT is on my list for the year after next...wish i could go tomorrow

an hh was my first hammock... here's what mr. hennessy has to offer on the topic: http://hennessyhammock.com/use-as-a-tent.html... i'd definitely put some tyvek or other ground cloth under it. i could the the fabric getting worn or snagged on the ground. also i find it a pain to get in and out of on the ground via bottom entry though certainly doable. i'm more less numb to crawlys. i once had an ant colony under my bed, nothings really rivaled that since

You might be doing it in a few weeks... there's a lot of snow and they are delaying opening parts of Sequoia/Kings Canyon, also the cables on Half Dome aren't going up on schedule. There will be snow above treeline later this year.

In any case, I have hammocked at 10,000 feet, on the east side of Donahue. I went to ground twice due to wind rather than due to no trees. Sometimes you get really late snow storms.... Put down the pad first, then the hammock.

There's a reason I'm scheduling the JMT section from Kearsarge to Whitney in late August. I have no desire to shift gears from hiker to mountaineer, really.

You would probably do well to have at least trekking poles and some sort of crampon, yaktrax are easily worn out/snapped in all the granite but better than nothing.
