Hi everyone,
I haven't even bought a hammock yet.
I have returned to Seattle from New Mexico last year and my 15-year-old love of hiking and camping has resurfaced. My 12-year old son and I have enjoyed several hiking and camping trips. (And, to be honest, enjoyed buying building and tinkering with gear to make a semi-ultra-lite two person kit.) We want to try some backpacking trips. We have also learned that it is more fun when my son has a friend his age to play with.
Which brings me to the topic of hammocks. Although I cold get a three-person tent, I think I would sleep better tied to a tree than in a tent with two giggling kids. After a little research, I have a dream.
I imagine beginning by buying a Hennessy Ultralite Backpacker Hammock, and using it with may z-fold thermarest and 25 deg down sleeping bag. My dream, however is to make a down underquilt and overquilt that velcro to the hammock or to each-other to make a sleeping bag. Ideally over-sized snakeskins will allow shelter and sleeping gear to pack up together.
I would like to hear your thoughts about my initial hammock choice as well as the practicality of my dream. Questions: Bottom entry or zip? The two trees in my back yard are 3' and 2' in diameter and 26' apart will they work? What tree huggers should I get and how many?
Thanks, I hope to hang out with you all soon.
