Red face Not even a newbie yet

    Hi everyone,

    I haven't even bought a hammock yet.

I have returned to Seattle from New Mexico last year and my 15-year-old love of hiking and camping has resurfaced. My 12-year old son and I have enjoyed several hiking and camping trips. (And, to be honest, enjoyed buying building and tinkering with gear to make a semi-ultra-lite two person kit.) We want to try some backpacking trips. We have also learned that it is more fun when my son has a friend his age to play with.

Which brings me to the topic of hammocks. Although I cold get a three-person tent, I think I would sleep better tied to a tree than in a tent with two giggling kids. After a little research, I have a dream.

I imagine beginning by buying a Hennessy Ultralite Backpacker Hammock, and using it with may z-fold thermarest and 25 deg down sleeping bag. My dream, however is to make a down underquilt and overquilt that velcro to the hammock or to each-other to make a sleeping bag. Ideally over-sized snakeskins will allow shelter and sleeping gear to pack up together.

I would like to hear your thoughts about my initial hammock choice as well as the practicality of my dream. Questions: Bottom entry or zip? The two trees in my back yard are 3' and 2' in diameter and 26' apart will they work? What tree huggers should I get and how many?

Thanks, I hope to hang out with you all soon.

    Welcome to the forum.
Zip entry, for sure. Less confined for situating pads, bags, quilts, etc.
Your going to need a few hammocks for the kids, too.
I'll suggest a Blackbird hammock from Warbonnet. Big, luxurious, and of course, the all important footbox.

I haven't experimented with velcro as a uq attachment device... my thinking is it won't work as well as shockcord. The fabric of the hammock moves around a bit, and the shockcord allows the quilt to "free float" around the hammock, yet stay close.

Your trees are far apart, you will have to put your tree straps high, 10 feet up?, for the angles to work well with a hammock. If you could put a pole or 4x4 into the ground at 15 foot away from the tree, it would help ease the set up. I have trees at 20 feet, and its still a pain. I need to do a stand or plant a pole, as well.
You can make your trees work, just going to be tougher than needed.

A zipper on the bug net will save you from eternal squirming to get the pad, or under quilt adjusted. Go with the zipper.

    Thanks everyone.

    Thanks everyone.

I am convinced. I will go with a zipper. I will set up a post (8' 4x4 sunk 2' deep with concrete) 15' from a tree before getting an HH UL Backpacker.

Why do that? When you get it, that means it's time to go out it the Piney Wood's (as Shug would say) and give it a go!!!!!!
I have the 2QZQ zipper mod and it's "GREAT" best mod by far to get for the HH, well that and whoopie sling suspension, OES tarp (or the like), and on, and on!
