If you only have large diameter trees

So, if my tree selection is limited to very large trees, and my tree huggers won't even go around the tree one time and meet at the ends, do I just double my line back through the ends and then up behinds itself when hanging my HH hammock? This won't damage the tree will it?

It shouldn't damage the tree. The force is all distributed to the back side of the tree anyway. However, it'll be a big pain to tie and untie like that, so you might want to consider getting/making longer huggers. Or converting to straps

That works. All you need is one loop between the ends of the hugger, though. Something to wrap the figure-8 around.

And if the cord is stressing the tree, just grab a few twigs and break them to about 3" long. Insert them vertically between the Spectra and the bark. That should hold the Spectra off the bark and keep it from girdling the tree.

But like bb said, most of the force is on the back side of the tree so unless the tree is almost 2x as big around as the hugger, it probably won't cause any real damage anyway.

That's a good lookin' tree you found to model for your sketch. Light hit it just right.

So next question, for those of you who have been on the AT all over....what are the chances that I will not be able to find trees w/small enough diameters? Are there any sections where the trees are just huge and this would be a problem?

If it helps, I made larger straps. They are I think almost 3ft each I can't remember. I also added a d-ring to the end to make it easier to tie.
