    Smile Whipping

    Hello All,
I am in the middle of making my first HH clone, and am trying to decide between a 'W' fold then whipping or a gathered end type. Any recommendations? If I use a gathered end ala the Warbonnet Blackbird will the hammock lay like a HH or will I have to add a foot box?

If you use the Warbonnet method you should get a lay like a Warbonnet. Brandon, the creator of that hammock has explained that the foot box does not affect the lay of the hammock. The hammock would take that shape naturally once you put your feet there.

Since Warbonnets are well regarded for their comfort, I use that method for all my gathered end hammocks.

I did the gathered end first. Thing was super comfortable. Then I decided to mess with it and it became not so comfortable, and I couldn't seem to find the magic again. So I tried the W. I've been using that for a couple of months and really like it.

If you're whipping, just try each out for awhile. Don't trim the ends of the whipping and you can even re-whip while on the trail. It's easy enough to do that you can really try different variations. Gathered at the head, asymmetrical W on the foot end, etc.

I've found both work well. The hammock will 'let itself out' over time and conform to the shape gravity dictates. Sometimes great/sometimes not so great. Don't be afraid of your gear. Play with it. You'll be real happy

May want to refer to this if you want a true clone

For the whipping on my DIY hammock I settled on starting with the edges together in the center (like on the Hennessey clone how to) but then do accordion (W) folds on each side rather than rolling it in.

I experimented with the gathered and Hennessy methods as well. The Hennessy method will pull the center and ends tighter than the rest of the body. Gathering won't do that. Bringing the edges in and then accordion folding will get you something in between. I prefer the lay from this method to that of the others.

I found I like the WBBB style as it doesn't pull up the sides... My first hammock used an accordion fold across the whole side, with a little extra pulled up on the ends. The result was a large bathtub shape, with high sides. It worked well. I added a footbox triangle, but it didn't affect the lay, it's purpose was to keep my feet in the hammock. (It was 9' long, a bit short for me being 6' tall...)

With the WBBB style whipping, I find I don't have to reach over the side of the hammock, I can pull the side down and look out, nearly at the horizontal. It's also easier to do..

I like it, but I'd recommend playing with what you have and see what works best for you...

    Thanks All,
After experimenting today with different types of ends I prefer the Warbonnet method works best for me. My two cents.
